The long, narrow catwalk leading aft was becoming all but impassable. I stood at the end of the passageway waiting for the right sequence of waves to come along before making a move. I let two or three big ones sweep by, then I went for it, running fast as possible across a surface that was more like jelly than steel, carefully keeping a tight grip on the slender cable that served as a handrail. By the time I reached the far end of the catwalk, I was thoroughly drenched with sea water. No matter, it was better than being swept over the side by one of the monster waves.

I caught my breath, then made the rounds, checking portholes and doors to ensure they were secure and covered by blackout curtains. They all seemed secure. A few of the black gang were standing out on deck in a lee corner, talking quietly among themselves, but if they had been smoking they must have spotted me coming and doused their cigarettes. A few of them nodded hello.

Once again I waited for a lull in the waves before venturing back onto the catwalk. Halfway across the passageway on the return trip to midships, there was suddenly, incredibly, an overpowering acrid smell of gunpowder. It was followed a split second later by a thunderous blast. Then I saw Columbiana, only two ships away, suddenly engulfed in flames.
